Dunbar Vocational High School

The Chicago Police Department and CPS Office of Safety and Security will host a feedback session on School Resource Officers (SROs), the Chicago police officers stationed in public high schools around the city.

This is an opportunity to discuss and reimagine screening and selection criteria, training requirements, roles and responsibilities. While SROs are only in select high schools, any individuals interested in sharing their thoughts on this important topic are invited to this session.

Suggested reading:

  • Involvement of community stakeholders in determining roles and responsibilities for SROs was called for in a 2018 report from the Office of the Inspector General. It was stipulated in the consent decree that these changes would be in place for the 2019-2020 school year.
  • Chalkbeat article on the implications of the Inspector General’s report.
  • City Bureau x Curious City collaboration features interviews with high school students on their experiences and suggestions for SROs.
  • City Bureau article in the Chicago Reader on the historical context and current state of SROs in schools.
