Ward 10 residents talk about problems with ATVs, broken glass and learning about upcoming changes regarding new marijuana law.

Sharon Connor (City Council Member, Ward 10) started the meeting at 6:02 PM and held an optional pledge of allegiance

The community engagement officer for Ward 10 said that there have been complaints about ATVs in neighborhood parks and asked neighbors to report any gambling institutions (all gambling institutions are illegal in Akron).

The officer said that weed is still illegal as weed laws are being amended
A community member asked about broken glass trash in the streets. The officer said that some teenagers may be breaking glass
Connor said that she wants to bring back public service to clean up litter.

Connor said that there is a community cleanup coming soon in Middlebury
Connor said that she is employing houseless people to pick up trash
The officer that Malik's paid community service time that allows city employees to pick up trash and volunteer for Keep Akron Beautiful.

A person from Direction Home is an organization which provides services to help elderly people to live at home and stay out of a nursing home

There will be an Expo on Saturday May 18th at Firestone HS which will give out free lunches and seminars on how to help older adults live to the fullest. The event will also include theatre and planetarium events

The Senior Summit event will be accessible to all people and will only showcase services and not be trying to sell attendees things
The organization will also be providing home care, home adaption for accessibility, and other services and programs for seniors

A community member asked if the organization was a resource to turn toward to help the elderly, he responded that they are, but are not emergency services.

A representative from the Akron Parks Collaborative said that the Akron's Parks challenge will provide two $150,000 grants that go toward a city park where a resident led improvement plan will get funds to improve a park.

Ward 10 has received improvement grants for Reservoir Park, Jewett Park, and Long Park.
The representative explained that people can work together to have a park selected or individuals may apply. He stressed that bringing attention to parks in need help improve parks

Connor said that Council Approved the "Tom Todd" Middle School Summer Camp which helps students community improvement ideas and have them funded.
The program has been expanded from 2 weeks at Summit Lake, to 4 weeks at Vincent House in Middlebury.

Connor said that Christine Higham will be holding a fundraiser tomorrow
Connor said that letter carriers will be holding a food drive to support local food banks in Akron
Connor said that the Goodyear Library will be hosting a case manager will be at the library to help people.

A librarian said that there is a tea cup event for children coming up
She also said that there is a bag sale from 10-3 for whatever you can fit in a brown paper bag
She also said on May 4th at 11 there will be a book swap recruitment event for a local book club

The librarian said that the library is doing a library passport to visit every Akron library and win prizes

A community member said that he is concerned about school zone speeding in his neighborhood and that an elderly person was hit in his yard.
Connor said that speed tables will be coming, as well as traffic calming measures will be funded by the Safe Routes To schools Grant.

A community member said that large trucks are cutting through residential streets and ruining weight limited streets
Connor said that she will speak to the construction companies.

A community member asked about the Reservoir Park
Connor said that the community center will close May 31st for construction. She also said that she is requesting that a full time staff member be kept at Reservoir Park during the closure.

A community member asked about Goodyear Middle School
Connor said that the owner is looking into senior housing or a new hotel.

Connor went through her packet and said that there is a list of little free libraries, a Middlebury cleanup, Plant Sales, Reservoir Park concerts and Markets will be at Guzebo Park, Soujourner Truth Plaza dedication on May 29, and a reenactment of the Akron flood.
